Chasing Shadows

A Shadow of Good Things to Come

Observe the shadow cast on the pavement when the sun is shining from behind you.  It produces a vague outline of your shape.  It is not a perfect representation.  God’s law is a shadow, “For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.” (Hebrews 10:1).  It is not the exact image and cannot make anyone perfect.  It is a shadow of perfect nature of God.  When we receive God’s Spirit, which is the very essence of His mind and nature, we can become like God.  The law was only a shadow of what we can become.  It is not the law that makes us perfect.  It is the Spirit of God that enables us to fulfill the law and grow to perfection.

Shadow of Things to Come  Ancient Israel had a way of life that set it apart from other nations.  Its culture foreshadowed the future revealing God's plan of salvation.  The material blessing promised to Abraham's descendents was a mere shadow of the spiritual blessing that is to benefit all of mankind.

Substance of the Shadows  Jesus Christ is the substance of the spiritual promise made to Abraham over four thousand years ago.  He will return to implement the plan of salvation that God revealed through the unique culture of ancient Israel.

Shadow of Things to Come   Jesus Christ provided the means for mankind to escape the condemnation that hangs over this world.  He made it possible for each of us to come out from the darkness of the shadow of death into the light of God's glorious Kingdom.
