Who can tell us why we are here? What is the purpose of life? Why is that purpose a mystery and where do we look for the answers that elude so many? Ironically the answers can be found in the world’s best selling book – the Bible - where they are revealed to those who have eyes to see and ears to hear.
In the Beginning
In the beginning, God created the heavens and earth for a purpose. When He said “Let us make man in our image,” He obviously had a plan. Just as children are the images of their parents, we have been made in the image of our Creator. God is spirit, but we have been created from physical elements - out of “the dust of the ground” (Genesis 1:26, 2:7).
Notice the use of the plural pronouns “us” and “our” used when God said “Let us make man in our image -” indicating more than one being was involved in the creation. The Hebrew word for God is ‘Elohim’, a plural word that is similar in nature to a surname. The name God applies to both the Father and the Word (Logos), who was with Him from the beginning and through whom He created all things. They are two separate beings but both are God (John 1:1-3). The Word was none other than the one who became Jesus Christ the Son of God (Revelation 19:13).
God is a family, currently comprising Father and Son. Christ the son is “the first born among many brethren” implying that there are more sons and daughters yet to be ‘born’ (Romans 8:29). If we are created in the image of God, then we are those sons and daughters, destined to be “joint heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:16-17, II Corinthians 6:18). Paul confirmed this when he referred to us as Christ’s brethren [brothers] (Hebrews 2:11). We were created to become part of God’s family and will inherit all things (Revelation 21:7).
The Universe Awaits
Paul said that the whole creation - “waits for the revealing of the sons [and daughters] of God” (Romans 8:19) – “The creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labours with birth pangs together until now” (verses 20-22). Not only will the Universe, with its innumerable galaxies, solar systems and planets, be given to the children of God, but it will be released from its present condition to be formed into something even more spectacular.
Can you imagine having the sort of power at your disposal that God used to bring the universe into being, or the ability to design and create complex life forms and the intricate environment that sustains them? What we see of God’s magnificent creation around us on this earth may only be a small sample of what is intended for the whole universe. It is only the shadow of things to come. Paul said that the “sufferings of this present time are not worthy, to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).
It is therefore plain that God wants his family to share in the task of finishing the creation of this vast and wonderful universe that is to be our domain. However, before He entrusts such power to His children, He must be absolutely sure, beyond all possible doubt, that we will not use these gifts for evil. During this life we have been exposed to evil and overcoming that evil is part of the preparation for what is ahead. We can only conquer evil with God’s help (I Peter 5:10, Hebrews 13:20-21, Colossians 1:22-23, Ephesians 4:12-13). That is why we have been created as physical, temporary beings from the dust of the ground to be tested, proven and perfected, before being transformed into a permanent, spiritual state (I Corinthians 15:44-50). Paul said - “as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly man” (verse 49, see also John 3:15-17).
In Body and Mind
Not only are we to be like God in body – but in mind also (Philippians 2:5).
The human mind lacks spiritual perception and is not capable of thinking in the manner God does (Romans 8:6-8, Jeremiah 17:9, Isaiah 55:8). To bridge the gap, God’s Holy Spirit helps us to perceive and understand things of a spiritual nature. It is the very essence of His mind working with ours (Ezekiel 36:26-27). This is the beginning of our transformation (Romans 12:2). It starts with the conversion of the mind and is completed when we are resurrected to eternal life (I Corinthians 15:42-44, 51-52). Once resurrected as spirit beings we will be fully created in the image of God and ready for what He has in store for us.
God has carefully planned how He will accomplish His purpose. The only thing that can prevent us reaching our destiny is if we give up. By giving up and rejecting God we abort the process (Luke 9:62, Revelation 20:15). In this life we face many trials and tribulations, but those who endure to the end and remain faithful will become joint heirs of all things (Revelation 21:7).
Proclaiming the Plan
Thousands of years ago God sent His prophets to prophesy about His magnificent plan and events to come. He sent His very own son, Jesus Christ, to proclaim the Kingdom of God to the world and to open the way for each of us to participate in this awesome plan. Christ, in turn, sent his followers out into the world to proclaim the good news. And down through the ages believers have continued to take this same message to those who are willing to listen.
Along with the good news about the Kingdom of God, Christ also warned that many would preach in His name deceiving, not a few, but many (Matthew 24:5, II Peter 2:1-3). He predicted that religious teachers claiming to represent Christ, will deceive many with their erroneous teachings, especially toward the end of this age (Matthew 24:11-14, 24). Satan, the god of this world, has used these false teachers to deceive the world (II Corinthians 4:4, Revelation 12:9). They have replaced the truth with false concepts cunningly taught in the name of Christ, blinding this world to the true purpose of life and God’s plan.
Eyes to See and Ears to Hear
That is why so many do not know why they are here and the purpose of their life is – they have been deceived. But we do not have to continue being deceived. The answers have been made available to us. Many people do not realise that the truth they seek is in their own Bibles.
The purpose to life, and details of God’s magnificent plan, have been revealed to those who have eyes to see and ears to hear. Your eyes have now been opened to the truth about who you are and what your destiny is. Will you believe it?
